Privacy policy

Runs reveal where you live. This page says what GainGround records, who can see it, where it is kept and how to make it go away.

Who we are

GainGround is the running app and this website. We are the controller of the personal data described here. Reach us at support@gainground.run.

What we collect

Only what the game needs:

  • Your account: email address, username, display name and a password, which Supabase stores hashed. We never see the password.
  • Your runs: the GPS track the app records while you run, its start time, distance and duration. The track is used to work out which cells the run claims and is kept with the run.
  • Your territory: the cells you have run through and when. This is what the map and the leaderboards show.
  • Your friends and groups: friend requests, friendships and group memberships.
  • A push token for each device you sign in on, so we can notify you when a friend takes your ground.

How we use it

To run the game: claim territory from your runs, show the map and leaderboards to the people in your arenas, and send the notifications described in the app. We process your location because the game cannot work without it, and we do not use it for anything else. We do not sell data, and we do not show advertising.

Who can see what

Runs reveal where you live, so GainGround shows as little as the game allows.

  • Your friends and the members of your groups see your username, display name, your territory on the map, your cell count and the area your latest run claimed.
  • Nobody sees your GPS tracks, not even your friends. The app never sends a track to another phone.
  • People outside your arenas see nothing. Anyone can look up a username to send a friend request, nothing more.

Where it lives and who helps us

Your data is stored in the European Union, in a Supabase project in Frankfurt, Germany. Our server runs on Vercel in the same region.

Three services process some data on our behalf: Supabase for accounts and storage, Vercel for hosting, and Expo's push service, which hands notifications to Apple and Google for delivery. The app loads its map tiles from OpenFreeMap, which sees your device's IP address and the map areas you look at, like any website would, but never your runs.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. Delete your account in the app, under Profile, and your profile, runs, territory, friendships, group memberships and push tokens are deleted immediately. Ground that other runners took from you before that stays with them, as cells without any link to you.

Without the app, email us from the address you signed up with; gainground.run/delete-account explains both ways.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how we process it. Most of this you can do yourself in the app; for the rest, email us. You can also complain to your data protection authority.

Children

GainGround is not meant for children under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and we tell you in the app if the change matters to you.
